By Courtney Veyrasset and Lauren Haus Abstract The purpose of this experiment is to examine the concept of osmosis, specifically, how osmosis works. We will use gummy candies and place them in different solutions with higher osmosis.

Our hypothesis, based on the mechanics of osmosis, will be that solutions with higher concentration of water molecules than the concentration of water molecules contained in the gummy candy will expand the gummy candy because water from a higher concentration will move towards an area where water is at a comparatively lower concentration.

Vice-versa, if we place gummy candies in solutions where there is less concentration of water molecules compared to the water molecule concentration in the candy, the candy will shrink.

The type of solutions with varying water molecule concentration will represent our independent variable.

The measurement of the candy after several days soaked in the solutions will represent our dependent variable. Each candy and time Gummy bear experiment it will soak in the solutions will be the same. As predicted, the candies increased and decreased according to the type of solutions in which they were soaked.

Specifically solutions with greater water molecules than that contained in the candies such pure as pure water and baking soda water solution created candies that were larger than the original size. We concluded that water molecules moved into the permeable candy membrane.

On the other hand, candies soaked in solutions with less water molecule than that contained in the tummies created candies that were smaller than the original size. WE concluded that water left the candy.

A solution with no water molecules isopropyl alcohol did not change the gummy size as expected. The alcohol served as our control factor. In conclusion, this short and easy experiment highlighted a natural process that is important to many biological and natural functions.

The experiment showed that osmosis does not require energy to occur which is important because in biology and the world in general, energy consumption is important key to determine if a process occurs spontaneously or not.

The gummy candies will be soaked in the various solutions for an equal amount of time and ten they will be measured by length to see if they had shrunk or grown.

The candy measurement will act as the dependent variable A solution containing isopropyl alcohol will be used as the control variable as it does not contain water in the solution.

Osmosis is a natural process where water will go from high concentration to low concentration.

It is an important biology process for cellular activity. Animal cells, including human cells, have semi-permeable membrane so that things can go inside and outside a cell. Water is a fluid that needs to be able to enter and exit a cell.
